January 11th 2013 @ 6:00 pm- Mandarin Immersion Program Informational Session for prospective students

FUSD Mandarin Immersion Flyer_2013_Final

In preparation for January 2013 registration for the 2013-2014 school year, FUSD and the Chinese Immersion Parents’ Council of Fremont are sponsoring an Informational Meeting for parents interested in enrolling their children in the Mandarin (Chinese) Immersion Program: Friday, January 11th, 2013 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm at Azevada Elementary School.

Open Registration begins on January 24th, 2013 for the Fremont Unified School District magnet Mandarin (Chinese) Immersion Program.   Applications are now available for Kindergartners and 1st graders starting Fall 2013.

Program Goal: Provide children the opportunity to learn to speak, read, and write in both Mandarin and English while following standard state-mandated guidelines for curriculum and instruction for all subjects.

Instruction Model: Instruction starts in Kindergarten with 90% taught in Mandarin and 10% in English. Beginning in 1st grade, Mandarin instruction will decrease 10% and English increase 10% until they are evenly split.  The goal is for all program students to be fully bilingual by 6th grade.

Curriculum: Language curriculum is based on the Better Chinese textbook series, which is used in San Francisco and the Fremont Chinese School.

School Site: Azevada Elementary School (39450 Royal Palm Drive, near Mowry and Interstate 880).

Enrollment Process: Obtain a Registration Packet and application for the Immersion Program at your child’s home school.  Complete the registration process at your child’s home school and bring the Immersion Program Application to Azevada.

•Registration priority will be given to: 1) Siblings of Fremont resident students currently enrolled in the program and 2) Students whose home school is Azevada.
•All other Fremont resident students will be granted enrollment through a lottery process if more students complete an enrollment request than there are spaces available in the program.

Benefits of a Language Immersion Program:“In addition to reaping the social and economic advantages of bilingualism, immersion learners benefit cognitively, exhibiting greater nonverbal problem-solving abilities and more flexible thinking……over three decades of studies consistently show that immersion students achieve as well as or better than non-immersion peers on standardized measures of verbal and mathematics skills administered in English…”1

•Knowing other languages is a 21st century skill set for American students as they prepare to live and work in a global society.
•It will provide them the opportunities to broaden their horizons and develop a deeper understanding of our culturally diverse world.

We hope to see you on the 11th to hear more about this wonderful opportunity!
